Don't Know if a Property is Vacant?

VTG Development Corporation has some helpful hints to determine if a property is vacant.

  • The most obvious and your first approach should be to knock on the front door. If someone answers, guess what? It’s not vacant!
  • If no one answers, try looking through the windows. Are there furniture or personal belongings that indicate someone is living in the house?
  • Look to see if utilities are on.
    • The electric meter: a blue or green tag will typically indicate that the electricity is on. A white, red or yellow tag typically indicates the electricity is off.
    • Gas Meter: is there a pin lock on the valve, or is it in the open position?
  • Another sign that the house is vacant usually can be seen with tall grass and newspapers/flyers piled around the mailbox and doorstep.
  • The last step to finding out if the house is vacant would be to ask the neighbors. They usually will know if the residents moved, or who is staying in the house.
